CT ScannerMedical Equipment Spotlight – The CT Scanner

In a previous article, we covered why buying refurbished medical equipment for your business can save you money and help reduce the carbon footprint of your company. If you haven’t had a chance to read it, you can find it here Why buy refurbished medical equipment. To expand on and give a slightly more detailed description about some of the medical equipment GlobeCom trades and deals with, we would like to showcase a variety of equipment and the benefits that comes from using them, starting with the CT Scanner.

What is a CT Scanner?

The CT Scanner is one of the most valuable medical diagnostic tools for internal body scans in the current field. Both CT and the conventional X-ray scanners take pictures of the internal body structure of the patient, however, the X-ray scan is usually only used on “top” layer problems, because the structures overlap, for example the bones on the ribcage overlay the heart and the lung, making it difficult to spot details beneath the “top” layer. Whereas the CT Scanner eliminates the overlapping structures and makes the internal anatomy more visible thereby making a diagnosis easier. The imaging process of the CT Scanner involves an X-ray tube that rotates around the patient, which allows for many angles of images which are then collected and stored in a computer. This computer then analyzes the images and creates a new image with no overlying structures, which can then be viewed to make a diagnosis. The images allow the identification of internal structures with detailed information of shape, size, density and texture of the elements within a specific body, this information can be used to determine if any medical problem, as well as the extent and location, is present. Even if the CT Scan shows no abnormality, this information still provides valuable data that can help finding the correct diagnosis of the patient.

What are the benefits?

The CT Scanner provides an effective medical management by:

  • Making it easier to determine when surgery is necessary, helping the staff and patient.
  • Greatly reducing the need for an exploratory surgery by giving an overview of the problem area.
  • Improving the diagnosis of cancer and thereby making the treatment process comprehensive.
  • Improving the treatment of common conditions such as injury, cardiac disease and strokes, by giving more accurate and detailed information.
  • Improving the placement of patients into the areas of care where they can get the best treatment.

The CT Scanner have improved the overall medical examination field, with detailed information that makes it easier and faster for doctors to assess a patient and it shows the surgeons where to operate. The benefits of a well-planned surgery by using the CT Scanner outweighs the very small risk of radiation exposure.
Although there are other imaging examination machines, a CT Scanning provides different medical information than equipment such as ultrasound, MRI and PET with each equipment having advantages and limitations. The main advantages of the CT Scanner are:

  1. Making it easier to determine when surgery is necessary, helping the staff and patient.
  2. Greatly reducing the need for an exploratory surgery by giving an overview of the problem area.
  3. Improving the diagnosis of cancer and thereby making the treatment process comprehensive.

There are no other imaging procedures that combine these advantages into a single session like the CT does, which makes it a valuable asset in the medical field.
